An All-Round Forklift Productivity Tool

A globally leading steel and technology group with a unique combination of materials and processing expertise based out of Austria at first began looking for primarily a safety tool for their forklift fleets. With over 500 companies and operating in 50 countries worldwide as a leader they wanted to take their industrial vehicle safety to the next level. Looking primarily at controlling access of the vehicle and ensuring that regional forklift safeties were compliant before and during every shift.

Working with a local dealer who manages their North American major account a meeting was set up with us to determine what options might be best suited to meet their safety requirements. Participants in the meeting on their side included not only Health and Safety officers but also operations and engineering as the two departments work very close to meet integrated company production and safety targets.

Modular Options that Meet Both Safety and Production

At first safety options were discussed as they would meet the immediate needs of the Health and Safety department. However, upon exploring different options that IVDT had and its modular manufacturingthere were a number production options that quickly gained the interest of the group. IVDT’s modular manufacturing allows customer such as this to select and add options that have direct impact on the application without the need to take on others that over complicate and burden down the operation. Working with the SkidWeigh Plus Classic ED3C system this metal fabrication company was able to create a custom solution for them that included the following.

Upon powering the truck, the system requires an operator ID to move to the pre-shift safety check. Failure to do so results in a warning strobe indicating that the vehicle has yet to sign in. Once signed in the system automatically calibrates an impact accelerometer to register low and high impacts, one to warn the operator that they are nearing a potentially dangerous threshold and another that results in triggering the warning strobe when that high impact is reached. This ensures that operator and management have clear understanding pertaining to vehicle usage.

From a production standpoint the Classic ED3C and its modular options allowed the company to integrate the weighing suite of options that would let them weigh skids and totes, add multiple loads and notify them when they surpass an unsafe weight threshold. Also, of particular importance as a parts manufacturer this company had 32 different totes and bins and the Classic ED3C gave them the opportunity to input the tare weight of the bins to easily calculate the net weight of the parts. In both storage and shipping this option significantly helped manage inventory.
